PRO8 raises Mental Health Awareness

Camp Ruperto Kangleon, Palo, Leyte – To address the need for raising awareness on mental health, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO8) launched “Symposium on Mental Health Awareness in the Face of COVID-19: A Holistic Approach”, November 5, 2020, at Matapat Hall, Camp Ruperto Kangleon, Palo, Leyte.

A total of 100 participants, composed of Uniformed and Non-uniformed Personnel, attended the activity which was sponsored by EXELTIS PHARMA and supervised by the Regional Health Service 8 (RHS 8).

PBGEN RONALDO F DE JESUS, Regional Director, highlighted that the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the raising of mental health awareness among PNP personnel who are experiencing anxieties, fears and uncertainties.

“Now more than ever, mental health should receive the same concern with that given to physical health. We should widen our welcome and support to personnel who struggle with emotional and psychological distress. Raising awareness through this symposium is a great avenue to encourage those with issues to seek help”, says RD DE JESUS.

Speakers who graced the event were as follows: Dr. Arleene Grace Rosal, Psychiatric Officer, Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC); Dr. Aeris Nacion, General, Upper Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Surgery, Endoscopic, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery; Mr. Leo Leofranco, Fellow in Medicine of BSC Science in Research with affiliation of US, EU and UK; and Mr. Cherie Pulga, Medical International Specialist.

6 Minors from Cybersex Den Rescued

Camp Ruperto K Kangleon, Palo, Leyte – Police Regional Office 8 (PRO8) rescued six (6) minors, aged 7 to 17, said to be being offered for cybersex by the den owner, in an entrapment operation conducted in Mayorga, Leyte on Wednesday afternoon, November 18, 2020.
Authorities nabbed Rosemarie Comora y Cooper, 23 years old, single, resident of the said place, and a close relative of five (5) victims. In an initial investigation, Comora is accused of forcing the victims to engage in sexual acts in exchange for monetary payment of Php 5,000.00 for an “online show” with their clients abroad.
Among the pieces of evidence seized during the raid were cellphones and assorted sim and memory cards, all used in the cybersex operation. Meanwhile, charges are being prepared against Comora for violation of Republic Act No. 9208 as amended by Republic Act No. 10364 (Expanded Anti-Trafficking Act 2003).
PBGEN RONALDO F DE JESUS, Regional Director, said that the arrested suspect and the recovered evidence were brought to Mayorga MPS for proper disposition, while the victims, three (3) males and three (3) females, were turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 8 for their protective care, evaluation, and assessment.
“It is bothering how some people exploit our minors for some cruel purpose. Our children are to be loved and sheltered, not abused. I will see to it that the police force remains incessant against these violators who treat minors as their easy preys ’’, RD DE JESUS said.
The operation was conducted by the joint forces of PNP Women and Children Protection Desk 8 (WCPD 8); Women and Children Protection Center – Visayas Field Unit (WCPC –VFU); Leyte Police Provincial Office (LPPO) WCPD; Mayorga Municipal Police Station (MPS); Leyte Provincial Legal Office; and the Department of Social Welfare and Development 8 (DSWD 8).
